One of the most popular New Years resolutions for as long as I can remember is to lose weight either by diet, excercise or a combination of the two. Over the last few years I have noticed an alternative to this cropping up when I have been speaking to people at the start of January each year.

This is that people say they are going to “detox”. At first I took this to mean that they were going to lay off the booze for a while and drink loads of water however I now realise that there is a whole detox industry growing and like a lot of “new industries” there are both good and bad sides.

Having spent some time to research the meaning of detox I now realise that the term covers a multitude of sins and have therefore decided to create this blog to discuss these areas and review some of the detox products that are now available.

The Hibernation Diet

I have just come across a new diet developed by British pharmacist Mike McInnes and his son Stuart, a nutrition expert. The Hibernation Diet jumpstarts the body’s recovery system by revving the fat-burning metabolism, easing stress hormones and getting a better night’s help. You may wonder sometimes why your body seems to be heavy and you feel too lazy to move, yet you are not sick. You are more than willing to be energetic but your body is not just up to it.

To address the problem, you resort to eating more, drinking cups of coffee and (for some) smoking, thinking that you will feel more lively after. Often you feel better for a short while afterwards, however by doing so you are accumulating toxins in your body which will contribute to your lethargy and general tiredness.

Nowadays, we want our bodies to be constantly active so we can move along with the fast paced lifestyles. Hence, we resort to body stimulants such as coffee, cigarettes, diet pills, drugs and more thinking that they will help the body to stay alert. In, the long term they in fact do the opposite. These stimulants can cause loss of energy and emotional symptoms such as headaches, sickness and depression. They are also accumulated as toxins in the body.

Toxins are agents that can cause harm to the body. There are two kinds of toxins, the Exogenous or external toxins and Endogenous or internal toxins. The Exogenous toxins come from external sources such as car fumes, tobacco smoke, drugs, factory pollution, etc. Enogenous toxins come from viral or bacterial infection. The bodies metabolism also creates its own toxins called Autogenous toxins.
